April 10 2010
At the 2010 Southern Collegiate Championship, there was over 25 schools bringing over 60 boats to the event. The way this tournament event was set up, each school was allowed to use two best weights from each day of the two day tournament.
Day 1:
We were selected to take-off in the first flight on day 1. Unfortunately, we weren't able to pre-fish for this event. The night before we took a quick look at a map of the lake. We guessed that the fish would be shallow in preparation for the spawn. our decision was to fish the Fox Creek and Mallard Creek area. The forecast for day was hot and windy. The air temp. was in the low-80s and the wind was about10 mph.
We arrived in Fox Creek first. We located a good looking spot with a lot of bait fish, brush, and grass in about 1ft of water. Due to the heavy cover, I decided to throw a black buzz bait. After a few minutes with out a hit, I decided to change and tied on a brand new Tail Walker top water in the Wounded Shad color. My first cast was beside bush in about 1 foot of water. I jerked the Tail Walker a few times then let it pause on top of the water. All of a sudden, the water surface exploded as a 4.76lbs largemouth came soaring out of the water, off to a great start. After the top water bite slowed we switched to chart./white spinner baits 1/2oz double willow blade and Tail Walker pro football jigs. By the end of the day we managed to weigh in a five fish limit with a weight of 9.98lbs which put us in the fifth place position on day one.
Day 2:
The weather made a drastic change on day 2 of the tournament. The take-off was delayed an hour due to thunderstorms. The wind was blowing at 25mph, with a hard study rain to top it off.
On day one, I located an isolated piece of brush in 3ft of water near Mallard Creek and marked it on my GPS unit so that the direction We headed to start our second day of fishing. On our first three consecutive casts at this isolated brush, we bagged three keeper largemouth, all on spinnerbaits. Shortly after, we moved back to a spot that we had also fished in Fox Creek on day one.
The Tail Walker did some more damage there once again. The Wounded Shad colored top water bait caught another 8 laremouth with another 3 keepers. Our only problem on day 2 was finding a big bite. We kept culling only to save ounces.
We moved out on a ledge in order to find some bigger females. we managed to catch a few fish on the ledge but with no more size than what we had been catching. With three hours remaining, we moved across the lake to the Decatur Flats. We found a few fish on a large flat with dead grass in about 1.5ft of water and finished our day off with 5 fish and a total weight for day two of 10.48 lbs. Our Tennessee Tech team overall weight was 42.85 lbs which ended up giving us second place honors
